Meet Dr. Marilyn Betty Mathew, DDS

General, family and cosmetic dentist at Ingleside Family Dental in Ladson, South Carolina.

Dr. Marilyn Betty Mathew, DDS, dentist in Ladson, SC

Her background

NYU trained, practising in Ladson

Dr. Mathew is a graduate of the New York University College of Dentistry, one of the largest and most established dental schools in the United States. She is an active member of the American Dental Association, the South Carolina Dental Association and the Coastal District.

Before opening Ingleside Family Dental she practised as a general dentist across Wisconsin and South Carolina, treating patients of every age. She is experienced in treating patients with special needs, which is a specific clinical skill rather than a matter of goodwill, and she completes continuing education across a range of dental areas each year.

She had already qualified and practised as a dentist before arriving in the US, earning a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and completing a general practice residency overseas. That earlier experience is the reason she performs extractions, crowns, dentures and root canals routinely rather than referring them out.

What it means for you

Why more is handled in-house here

Plenty of general dental practices refer out anything surgical. A patient who needs an implant, a wisdom tooth removed or a root canal on a molar gets sent across town to someone they have never met, then sent back for the restoration.

That does not happen here. Implants, full-arch All-On-4, surgical extractions, root canal therapy and sedation are all provided at this office by Dr. Mathew. One practice, one relationship, one person accountable for the outcome.

The screening you may not notice

During her time at NYU, Dr. Mathew took part in research studying oral cancer and human papillomavirus. The practical result is an oral cancer screening at every examination here. It takes a few minutes, it looks at soft tissue rather than teeth, and it is the part of a checkup most likely to matter enormously on the rare occasion it finds something.

Where the limits are

If something genuinely falls outside what this practice should handle, you will be told plainly and referred. That is a better outcome than beginning treatment and handing it over partway, and it is the same principle behind telling you when a cheaper treatment would get you most of the way.

How she practises

Experience with patients other practices find difficult

Two things about Dr. Mathew's background come up repeatedly in patient reviews, and both are worth stating plainly.

The first is experience treating patients with special needs. This is a genuine clinical skill rather than a matter of goodwill: adapting appointment length, sequencing, positioning and communication to the person in the chair. If it applies to you or a family member, tell us when booking and we will plan the visit around it rather than discovering the requirement on the day.

The second is how she handles patients returning after a long absence. Reviews repeatedly describe people who had not seen a dentist in years, in one case a decade, and who expected to be told off. The consistent theme is that the conversation was about what to do next rather than what had happened before.
