ZOOM in-office whitening in Ladson, SC

The difference

Why in-office produces more change in less time

In-office whitening uses a substantially higher concentration of peroxide than anything you can use at home. That is only safe because your gums and lips are isolated and protected first, and because the whole process is supervised by the dental team.

A light is used to activate the gel, and the gel is applied in several timed cycles during the appointment rather than left on continuously. The combination is what produces a visible shade change in one sitting rather than over two weeks.

It is the right choice when you have a deadline: a wedding, a reunion, photographs, a new job. It is also useful for patients who know they will not be consistent with wearing trays at home every day.

The appointment

About an hour and a half

01

Shade record

We record your starting shade so the change is measured rather than guessed at, and so you can see the difference afterwards.

02

Isolation

Gums, lips and cheeks are protected. This step is what makes the high concentration safe, and it is the reason home kits cannot match it.

03

Whitening cycles

The gel is applied and light-activated in timed cycles, with the gel replaced between each one.

04

Finish and aftercare

A desensitising treatment is applied and you get specific guidance on what to avoid over the next 48 hours.

Afterwards

The first 48 hours matter most

  • Avoid coffee, tea, red wine and cola, since the enamel is temporarily more absorbent
  • Avoid tomato sauce, curry, soy sauce, berries and beetroot
  • Avoid tobacco entirely if you can, as this is when staining re-establishes fastest
  • Stick to lighter foods: chicken, rice, pasta, white fish, yoghurt
  • Use a desensitising toothpaste if your teeth feel sensitive
  • Consider custom take-home trays afterwards so you can top up without repeating the full appointment

Isolation

The step that makes the concentration safe

The reason an in-office session achieves in ninety minutes what trays take a fortnight to do is concentration. The gel is far stronger than anything sold for home use. That is only safe because of what happens before any gel is applied.

A retractor holds the lips and cheeks clear of the teeth. A protective barrier is placed along the gumline and cured in place, sealing the soft tissue away from the gel entirely. Only then is the whitening agent applied, and it is replaced between timed cycles rather than left sitting for the whole appointment.

This is the actual difference between supervised and unsupervised whitening. The risk with high-concentration products used at home is not that they fail to work. It is chemical burns to the gum from gel escaping a tray that was not made for your mouth.

The 48 hours afterwards

Enamel stays temporarily more absorbent once treatment finishes, which is why the aftercare window matters more than people assume. Coffee, tea, red wine, cola, tomato sauce, curry, soy and berries will all stain more readily in that period than they ever would normally. Two days of care protects a result you have paid for.

Common questions

Questions we hear most

How many shades will my teeth lighten?

It varies with your starting shade and the type of discolouration. Yellow and brown staining responds best. We record the starting shade so you can see the actual change rather than relying on impression, and we will give you a realistic expectation beforehand.

Is it painful?

Not usually painful, but sensitivity during and shortly after treatment is common, sometimes described as brief sharp twinges. It settles within a day or two. A desensitising treatment is applied at the end, and telling us early lets us adjust the cycles.

How does it compare with take-home trays?

In-office gets you further in one visit. Trays get to a similar place more gradually with generally less sensitivity, and they are easier to maintain over time. Many patients do in-office first, then keep trays for occasional top-ups. See teeth whitening.

Does ZOOM affect existing dental work?

No. Crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour at all. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, whitening the natural teeth around them can make them stand out, and they may need replacing to match. We will point this out before you commit.

How long before an event should I do it?

At least a few days, ideally a week. That allows any sensitivity to settle and lets the shade stabilise slightly, since teeth rebound a little from their immediate post-treatment brightness.

Can I do it if I have sensitive teeth?

Often yes, with adjustments. Tell us in advance and we can pre-treat with desensitising agents, shorten cycles, or recommend gentler take-home trays instead. Sensitivity is manageable, not usually a disqualification.
